What are fragrance notes?
You will notice that candles and wax melts found here include fragrance notes. 'Notes' are used in perfumery to describe the category that a scent falls into, based on the scent and staying power.
Fragrance notes fall into three categories; top notes, middle notes, and base notes.
Top notes (aka head notes)
These are first impression scents, the ones that you smell first when you breathe in a fragrance blend. Top notes have tiny, light molecules that evaporate quickly. These top note scents are often described as cheerful, bright, light, refreshing. Citrus oils fall into the category of top notes. Example: Lemongrass, Lime, Bergamot.
Middle notes (aka heart notes)
The middle notes of a fragrance are a bit more complex and full bodied than top notes. They are often the superstar of a fragrance blend, providing balance and harmony to enhance the top or bottom notes. Some popular middle notes are classic florals, light fruits, berries, and spicy or herbaceous notes.
Example: Jasmine, Black Pepper, Ylang-Ylang.
Base notes (aka bottom notes)
Base or bottom notes describe the oils that stay with you the longest. They have heavy molecules that take much longer to evaporate. Base notes add depth and richness to a blend as well as acting as an anchor for the entire fragrance. You smell these scents after the tops and middles have faded away. This is why one should always allow a candle to burn for sufficient time to allow the fragrance to fully disperse evenly around a room. Example: Clove, Sandalwood, Patchouli.
