• Make sure the candle is warmed up to room temperature before lighting it. If the wax is too cold this can affect the burn and the wax can tunnel.

 

• Light your candle in a well-ventilated room, away from draughts or fans, which can cause sooting (black marks on the vessel), or rapid, uneven burning.

 

• Burn for 4 hours at a time or until the wax has pooled to the edges of the vessel. Burning for less time can cause the candle to 'tunnel' which leaves a build-up of wax around the vessel's sides and can reduce the maximum burn time. Burning for longer periods (over 4 hours) can cause the wick to move, or slant.

 

• Stop burning your candle when 1cm of wax remains at the bottom, keeping an eye on a burning candle when the wax is low. Allowing the candle to burn to the bottom of the vessel may cause the vessel to break due to sustained high temperature.

 

NB. Candles will burn differently depending on the environment they are used in; the room size, length of burn time, type of fragrance and wax etc.

• Trim the wick to approximately 5mm before each burn. Long, or crooked wicks can create high flames, smoking or sooting. Trimming the wick following every burn is the easiest way to prevent this.

 

• After extinguishing the flame with a snuffer or wick dipper, centre and straighten the wick. Burning the candle for too long can cause the wick to move, slant, or tip over into the molten wax. If you see the wick is burning too close to the vessel wall, gently extinguish the flame and straighten the wick to prevent the vessel from cracking.

 

• Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings and matches, as debris in the wax can act as a secondary wick, encouraging your candle to burn faster.
